Sometimes by Sheenagh Pugh is one of my favorite poems of all time. It was written in 1999 and published in her collection Stonelight, which won the Wales Book of the Year award in 20002. The poem is about the possibility of things going well, despite the odds and the expectations. It is a poem of hope and optimism, of celebrating the good moments and the positive outcomes that sometimes happen in life.
The poem consists of three stanzas, each with four lines. The first stanza talks about how sometimes nature surprises us with its resilience and beauty, such as when a grapevine survives the frost or when a man achieves his goals. The second stanza talks about how sometimes humanity surprises us with its kindness and wisdom, such as when people choose peace over war, honesty over corruption, and compassion over indifference. The third stanza talks about how sometimes we surprise ourselves with our own actions and intentions, such as when we do what we meant to do, or when we find joy in unexpected places.
The poem uses simple language and a clear structure, but it also employs some poetic devices, such as rhyme, repetition, and imagery. The rhyme scheme is ABAB in the first and third stanzas, and AABB in the second stanza. The repetition of the word “sometimes” at the beginning of each stanza creates a sense of rhythm and emphasis. The imagery of the poem is vivid and concrete, such as the muscadel facing down frost, the sun melting a field of sorrow, or the man becoming what he was born for.
The poem is a reminder that life is not always bleak and hopeless, that there is always a chance for something good to happen, that we should not give up on our dreams and our values. It is a poem that inspires me to look at the bright side of things, to appreciate the small miracles and the big achievements, to be grateful for what I have and what I can do.
I love this poem so much that I decided to make a video where I read it aloud and share my thoughts and feelings about it. You can watch the video below, where you will see me reciting the poem with passion and emotion, as well as explaining its meaning and significance. I hope you enjoy the video and the poem as much as I do, and I hope they inspire you to be hopeful and optimistic in your own life.
