A conversation I had with a mentee yesterday reminded me of this quote from George Addair.
She was feeling fearful about the idea of boomeranging back somewhere after receiving new information and facing a new set of circumstances in her life.
Interestingly, I’ve had five or six similar conversations recently.
There seems to be a bit of a “yearn to return” in the air.
We often tell ourselves things like:
“I can’t go back.”
“They wouldn’t welcome me back.”
But in my experience, that’s rarely the case.
We tend to imagine impassable burnt bridges where there is actually a perfectly solid path back.
And we sometimes fail to give people enough credit for recognizing the value a returning teammate can bring—combining past experience with the new lessons they’ve learned elsewhere.
Short answer: push beyond the fear.
You never know what might be waiting on the other side.
